Fast T-Type Photochromism of Colloidal Cu-Doped ZnS Nanocrystals

This paper reports on durable and nearly temperature-independent (at 298-328 K) T-type photochromism of colloidal Cu-doped ZnS nanocrystals (NCs). The color NC powder changes from pale yellow to dark gray by UV light irradiation, the back a time scale several tens seconds minutes after stopping while decoloration reaction is accelerated submillisecond in solutions. much faster than those conventional inorganic photochromic materials. origin reversible photoinduced coloration revealed be strong optical transition involving delocalized surface hole which survives over minute escaping intraparticle carrier recombination due electron-hopping dissociation. NCs can easily prepared water-mediated one-pot synthesis are less toxic. Therefore, they promising for large-scale applications such as windows building materials addition applications. Moreover, present study demonstrates importance excited dynamics trap depths, resulting not only nanomaterials but also various advanced photofunctional materials, long persistent luminescent photocatalytic nanomaterials.
